He’s a bad boy. She’s a bad girl. When their worlds collide, nothing will be the same
again.
Dakota Blackstone plays bass for one of the hottest bands in the country, Insatiable Fire.
That’s why he’s confused when Hali Cole’s manager comes to him and proposes that
they sing a duet.
I mean, Hali’s cool and all that, but I’m not the lead singer of the band, my brother Phoenix is. But, they insisted they have the right Blackstone brother, so I thought I’d give it a try. I’ve known Hali for forever, but she was always on the arm of some other guy. But now—when she’s trying to pull her life together—it might not be the right time for me to take action on those feelings I have for her, which have always lurked just under the surface of our relationship.
Hali Cole has been a guy’s play toy for too long. She’s ready to live her life on her own.
Now is definitely not the right time to get involved with Dak. I’ve always loved him for being the brash, cocky, loud, unfiltered Blackstone brother. But I need to not feel this undercurrent of attraction I have for him. He’d be just another heartache, and I don’t need it.
But when danger rears its ugly head, will the two be pulled together or torn apart? And
who is it that has it out for Insatiable Fire? Should Dak trust his bassist’s instinct?
Excerpt ~
Dakota
When Hali Cole’s manager stopped in and asked me to sing a duet with her, I was
floored.
“Oh. You have the wrong Blackstone, Tony. You need my brother Phoenix. He’s the
singer. Hold on and I’ll—”
“No. I’m well aware of which Blackstone brother is the lead singer and who does
background vocals, and we want you.”
I gawked. “Me? Why?”
“Because I believe your voice would mesh with Hali’s better. And you two have a
certain…I don’t know. I just think you would work well together.”
Sing with Hali? Odd. But I had secretly wanted to do something on my own, and this
gave me the opportunity. I mulled it over. “How about this—I’ll give it a try, then we can decide whether it’s a good idea or not.”
“I’m already sure it’s a great idea because I heard you sing during the sound check
yesterday, and you have an outstanding voice.”
Even though I knew the guy was schmoozing me, I couldn’t help but feel warmed by his
words. “Thank you for saying that. I appreciate it, but—”
He held his hands in front of him. “If you want to consider it a trial, that’s fine. But we’ve
had this song for a while, looking for the right person to sing it with Hali, and you’re the guy. I’m positive you’ll love it. Any chance the two of you could get together around three tomorrow afternoon? She can show you the song, and maybe you can get in a little practice at Hali’s place—well, technically it’s Savanah Drew’s place—before we waste costly studio time. Sound good?”
I thought about my schedule. “Could we make it one? We’ve got a gig tomorrow night.”
“One it is. I’ll text you the address.”
And that was it. The conversation had lasted less than a minute, and I was roped into
singing with Hali.
What have I gotten myself into?

Bio ~
M.J. Schiller is a retired lunch lady/romance-romantic suspense writer. She enjoys writing novels whose characters include rock stars, desert princes, teachers, futuristic Knights, construction workers, cops, and a wide variety of others. In her mind everybody has a romance. She is the mother of a twenty-eight-year-old and three twenty-six-year-olds. That's right, triplets! So having recently taught four children to drive, she likes to escape from life on occasion by pretending to be a rock star at karaoke. However…you won’t be seeing her name on any record labels soon.
